Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center Mentoring Program

VTCRC Mentoring Program

click here-STEMThe VTCRC Mentoring program is a brand-new program modeled after the Big Brothers Big Sisters Beyond School Walls program, and it is designed to be a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters, Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, and Montgomery County Public Schools. The purpose of this program is to promote STEM education through mentoring. Children in the program will be matched for a minimum of one school year in one-to-one mentoring relationships with employees working in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field at the VTCRC. During the school year, Bigs and Littles will create and foster their relationship, and Big Brothers Big Sisters will track the outcomes and impact made. The vision for the program is for middle school aged children to come to the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center one day per week from 3:30PM-5PM. During that time, the students will spend one hour with their Big either at BBBS’ facility or the Big’s workplace. Workplace mentoring programs are impactful because they give children access to a professional environment. The Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center is a unique facility in the children will be exposed to a variety of industries in the professional and academic spheres.

Role models make an impact

National and local studies show that children who have role models are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, abuse drugs or commit crimes. In fact, the success of children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters was proven in a nationwide randomized study.
